Golden Bay is one of Malta's most popular
sandy beaches. It is set among countryside and is relatively
undeveloped. It does have the facilities you need for the day - a cafe-restaurant, sun lounger and umbrella hire, and plenty of fun
water sports from jet skiing and paragliding to banana boat rides.
It has easy access making it suitable for the less mobile or those
with small children. The atmosphere here is both chic and family
fun. As the second largest sandy beach, there is usually room for
games. The spectacular sunsets here have made the beach a popular
spot for evening barbecues. If you barbecue, please ensure you
leave the spot clean for bathers the next day and that you have
free-standing barbecue equipment. The beach is generally safe for
swimming but it is prone to strong currents when the wind is to
the north-west. A red flag indicates when bathing should be
limited to the shallow waters only.
Gnejna is a solitary bay on the
north-west coast just below the village of Mgarr. It opens up at
the end of a steep road down a lush valley - one of the prettiest
valleys in Malta. The coast and hills above are ideal for walking
in winter months. The bay has a sandy beach and smooth, rocky
platforms ideal for bathing in unspoilt waters. It is a perfect
place for spending a few quiet hours in natural surroundings. The
beach is quieter than its neighbours, Ghajn Tuffieha and Golden
Bay and seems almost isolated. A knights' tower provides a
dramatic landmark above the bay. There are no permanent facilities
here, though a snack bar is usually open in summer months. It is
advisable to take refreshments with you if you intend to stay more
than a couple of hours.
